Grace & St Peter’s is an Episcopal church
The Episcopal Church is a member province of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
The mission of the church, as stated in the Book of Common Prayer’s catechism (p. 855), is “to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.”
As part of that mission, we are following Jesus into loving, liberating and life-giving relationship with God, with each other and with the earth, as the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement.
We are part of The Episcopal Church in Connecticut
The basic unit of the Episcopal Church is the diocese, a geographic area. It is headed by a bishop. (The word "Episcopal" comes from the Greek "episcopos" meaning overseer).
Our diocesan bishop is the Rt. Rev. Ian T. Douglas, 15th bishop of Connecticut.
He works with the Rt. Rev. Laura J. Ahrens, Bishop Suffragan.
The photograph below shows our priest-in-charge, the Rev. Bob Bergner, with Allison Batson, our Christian Education minister, and the three young people from Grace & St Peter's who were confirmed by Bishop Ahrens at the Easter Vigil service at Trinity Church on the Green, 2019, along with candidates from several other Episcopal churches.
The Episcopal Church in Connecticut ("ECCT") is the collective witness of its 168 parishes and worshiping communities across the state. We believe that in our Baptism, we are co-missioned to participate in God's mission of restoring and reconciling the world. We recognize the changes taking place in our society and in the institution of the church, and we are listening to where God is active so that we can join God's work of restoration and reconciliation. We are learning how to "travel lightly, into the neighborhood, following Jesus."
What do Episcopalians believe?
We Episcopalians believe in a loving, liberating, and life-giving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world.
We have a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being.
Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation.
We believe that God loves you – no exceptions.
