GRACE AND ST JOHN’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

AT THE CROSSROADS

Centerville, Hamden, CT

at the corner of Whitney and Dixwell Avenues, across from Hamden Town Hall

Grace and St John’s is a wonderfully kind, generous and welcoming community, worshiping together …  serving our neighbors …  sharing God’s love.

This new congregation results from the merger of Grace and St Peter’s in Hamden
with St John the Evangelist, Yalesville.

A new website reflecting our new name and
our wider history
will be created over the coming months.

WE ARE A CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY

... welcoming and accepting of all people  for worship, praise, fellowship and prayer.

We strive for justice and peace among all people and respect the dignity of every human being.

SERVING OUR NEIGHBORS

At Grace and St John’s, we bring the Gospel into the world, giving our time and hearts to doing God’s work.

Every Friday night we host a dinner for the community.
We have many regular guests that come to enjoy the great home-cooked meal and friendly conversations.

We also participate in many other outreach ministries in the Hamden-New Haven area.

SHARING GOD’S LOVE

Our congregation is lively and diverse.  We come together in worship, service and fellowship: to share our lives, to support each other, to learn from each other, and to have fun together!

THE REVEREND
ROBERT BERGNER,
RECTOR

We are called to love and support each other, to share each other’s joys and sorrows, to pray for one another, to encourage one another and to comfort one another.

We are called to gather together in worship, to sing, to pray, and to hear and reflect on scripture, to break bread
and share the Body of Christ.

We are called to go out into the world,
to serve our neighbors and to share
the good news of God’s love and Christ’s victory over sin and death.

HISTORY

Grace and St. John’s is the product of a succession of mergers: first, the merger in 1990 of  two parishes, Grace Church in Centerville and St Peter's on the Hill, Benham Street.
St. Peter’s did not exist until 1958, but the history of Grace Church stretches back 200 years before the merger, when our nation was newly independent, the Episcopal Church USA had only recently established its own constitution and structure apart from the Church of England, and the town of Hamden was little more than a dusty crisscrossing of paths in the countryside.
